These are women who resisted French colonization of Vietnam in 1886.
They were arrested, had their freedom taken away, and were fitted with neck shackles.
This image was displayed at the War Remnants Museum in Vietnam , where I was deeply shocked to see it.
During a local tour, the guide mentioned that Vietnam is still a developing country largely due to its history of warfare.
Throughout history, Vietnam has faced imperialism from China, France, and Japan, as well as the more recent Vietnam War.
Each conflict was unwanted by the Vietnamese people and was fought to defend their independence.
Reflecting on this tragic history brings tears to my eyes.

歴史を見るとベトナムは中国、フランス、日本の帝国主義に翻弄されてきた。
そしてつい先日のベトナム戦争。
どの戦争もしたくてした戦争ではない。
自国の独立を守るための戦争だったのだ。
