I managed to finish reading In Order to Live using the translation function on Kindle.
My impression is that the book is as I expected—good in some parts, lacking in others.
It describes the struggle of living in North Korea, the hardship of escaping to China, and life in South Korea.
There are criticisms that it lacks authenticity.
We, as ordinary readers, cannot judge whether it’s true or not.
Certainly, there are some strange points.
For example, I doubted the part where she struggled to find her older sister, who had left North Korea before her.
As I read, many sentences referred to her older sister as missing, which I felt was meant to engage the reader’s interest.
It seemed like a typical tactic to evoke tears from readers.
First of all, I don’t understand why they had to leave North Korea separately.
In the book, the reason given was that the river would freeze, so her older sister crossed first.
But later, she and her mother successfully escaped, meaning it wasn’t a seasonal issue.
Usually, people escape together.
It seems convenient to say her older sister was missing to make the readers emotional.
In fact, there are many people who struggle to adapt to life in South Korea and wish to return to North Korea.
In contrast, the author has succeeded.
She succeeded as an author, so perhaps the emotional scenes were added for effect.

感想は、良くも悪くも予想通りの本だった。
北朝鮮での大変な暮らし、中国に逃れた以降の苦難、韓国での生活が綴られている。
書かれていることに真実性がないとの批判もある。
ただ、その真偽は我々一般読者にはわからない。
確かに、おかしいと思うところはある。
例えば、先に脱北した姉の行方が分からず探すのに苦労したという話については、本当かと疑いたくなる。
読んでいて、姉が行方不明でどこにいるかが分からないという話が随所に出てくるが、これは読者の関心を引くためと思わざるをえない。
お涙ちょうだいの定番だ。
第一、家族バラバラで脱北しなくてはならない理由が分からない。
本では、早くしないと川が凍ってしまうので姉が先に行ったとある。
でも後で母と筆者は脱北に成功しているので、時期的な問題はないはず。
普通は一緒に行くでしょ。
姉を行方不明にしておいた方がお涙頂戴で都合が良かったのではないか。
実は、韓国での生活になじめず、北朝鮮に戻りたいと考える脱北者も多いらしい。
そうしたなかで、著者は成功者だ。
作者として成功している。
だから、お涙頂戴のフィクションもありかも知れない。
