I was scolded by my wife today.
My wife is a big fan of Snow Man.
In Japan, “Snow Man” refers to a nine-member male idol group.
For Japanese people, it feels cool when we translate Japanese words into English.
When we hear the word “Snow Man,” we still think of it as cool.
But “Snow Man” actually means “雪だるま” in Japanese.
The word “雪だるま” in Japanese is something humorous or playful for Japanese people.
At least, it is not a cool or sophisticated word.
When I told her that “Snow Man” means “雪だるま,” it made her angry.
My wife didn’t know that “Snow Man” means “雪だるま.”
She also seemed to think of “Snow Man” somewhat like Superman.
So, she thought I destroyed her image of Snow Man.
I told my wife that “Snow Man” is “雪だるま.
今日は妻に怒られた。
妻はスノーマンの大ファン。
スノーマンとは９人の男性アイドルグループのことである。
日本人に取って、日本語を英語で表現すると恰好良く感じる。
スノーマンと聞くとやはり、格好よく思ってしまう。
でも、スノーマンとは日本語で雪だるまのことだ。
日本語の雪だるまは日本人に取っては、お茶目な存在に思える。
少なくとも恰好良い存在ではない。
妻に、スノーマンって雪だるまのことだよと言ったら怒られた。
妻はスノーマンの意味を雪だるまとは知らなかったのだ。
スノーマンをスーパーマンと同じように思っていたらしい。
だから、今まで抱いていたスノーマンのイメージを俺が壊したと思ったようだ。
妻に言う。スノーマンはただの雪だるまなのだ。
