In Japan, we ride escalators on one side if there is sufficient space to line up two people.
The other side must be left empty for people who are in a hurry.
I thought this was a good custom that indicates the Japanese people’s mindset.
However, recently, they say that it is dangerous to climb up like taking stairs, so you should not do it.
Nevertheless, we Japanese continue to leave one side open.
